Non-oil sectors boost Qatar Q2 GDP by 5 pct y/y

DUBAI | Sat Sep 29, 2012 3:45pm BST

DUBAI (Reuters) - Qatar's economy grew 5.0 percent from a year earlier in inflation-adjusted terms during the second quarter of 2012, as strong expansion in non-energy sectors including finance and construction largely offset a slacker energy sector, government figures showed on Saturday.

Gross domestic product growth slowed from the first quarter, when it was 6.9 percent year-on-year. Second-quarter GDP climbed 2.5 percent from the first quarter, the figures released by Qatar Statistics Authority showed.

The OPEC producer's economy is dominated by energy production, which accounts for roughly half of output. But that sector grew in real terms by only 0.8 percent from a year earlier in the second quarter and shrank 0.1 percent from the first quarter, because of softer global oil prices.

By contrast, the financial services sector grew 12.1 percent from a year earlier, transport and communications output rose 18.0 percent, and the construction sector increased 10.0 percent. Qatar has embarked on a major infrastructure building programme, partly in preparation to host the 2022 soccer World Cup.

In June, Qatar's state planning authority said it expected economic growth of 6.2 percent this year, slowing to 4.5 percent in 2013, the weakest rate in a decade.

Last year, growth was 14.1 percent. The slowdown is due to the fading impact of two decades of rapid expansion of natural gas production.

Jerusalem ? PM?s Camp Says NYC Trip Cleared Air with Washington

Jerusalem - Netanyahu returns satisfied after ?red line? speech to UN General Assembly; Canada?s Harper: Those who target Israel are a threat to free societies everywhere.

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu left New York for Israel Saturday night with aides expressing satisfaction that the key objectives of his trip ? clearly defining red lines on Iran and clearing the air with Washington ? were achieved.

?The first thing that he succeeded in doing was sharpening the message on Iran,? one source in Netanyahu?s entourage said of the prime minister?s speech Thursday to the UN. ?We were more specific about what we think should be the red lines, and that is important in framing the parameters of the debate.?

The official said that the visit, which included a phone conversation Friday with US President Barack Obama and a meeting Thursday with US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, ?strengthened and enhanced our dialogue with the US administration over these issues.?

In addition, the official noted, Netanyahu?s UN speech and his red line on a rudimentary sketch of a bomb received ?almost unprecedented coverage internationally? and succeeded in putting the Iranian nuclear program ?at the very center of the international political agenda.?

It is more clear than in the past what Israel means when it talks about red lines, the official said.

Netanyahu, in an interview with Channel 1, said he believed that placing a red line in front of Iran reduced the chances Tehran would cross it. He defined that line in his speech as the point before Iran had stockpiled enough low-grade and medium-grade uranium to begin working on high-grade uranium and a nuclear detonator.

Defining where the red line is, he said, gave ?a great deal of legitimization? to those who might want to act if Iran crossed it.

The prime minister, in a Channel 2 interview, said he did not discuss an Israeli attack in his speech ? only that the red line had to be at a point before Iran completed the second stage of enrichment needed for a bomb. Regarding his comment that the Iranians could reach that stage by springtime, Netanyahu said this would happen only if they continued enriching at their current pace.

?But lets see if they continue,? he said. ?I think that placing a red line is the best guarantor to prevent the need for military action.?

Netanyahu clarified that in saying Iran would not cross the line until at least spring, he ?never gave up for even a minute Israel?s right to defend itself at any time. I think that right is clear and understood by everyone.?

He added that it was important to make clear to the international community that Iran was continuing to move forward on its nuclear program, and that if it wanted to stop the program it had to do so ?before the finishing of the enrichment process.?

Washington?s refusal to articulate its red line has been a source of public tension in recent weeks between Israel and the US. Netanyahu, however, said that teams from both countries were working at the highest levels to try to translate into practical terms the joint objective of preventing Iran from attaining a nuclear weapon.

The White House stressed on Friday, following the Obama-Netanyahu phone conversation, that the US and Israel were ?in full agreement? on preventing Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon.

The two men discussed the coordination of their efforts and cooperation in dealing with Iran, according to a statement by White House press secretary Jay Carney.

While the statement did not say how long the conversation lasted, Netanyahu said it was a ?prolonged? discussion.

?The two leaders underscored that they are in full agreement on the shared goal of preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon,? the statement said.

The conversation was their second in three weeks, an unusually short stretch of time for two publicly announced calls. It comes after criticism of Obama for declining a meeting with Netanyahu while the premier was in the US for the UN General Assembly, and amidst discord between the two countries on how best to thwart the threat from Tehran.

Netanyahu?s comments to the UN Thursday and his comments that Iran would not cross his red line until at least spring suggested the timeline for any Israel action would not come until well into next year, after the US elections in November, reducing some of the immediate tension between the two countries.

?The temperature is lower than it had been,? an Obama aide said after the call.

The White House readout also noted that Netanyahu ?welcomed President Obama?s commitment at the UN to do what we must to achieve that goal.?

Netanyahu also spoke by phone Friday with Obama challenger Mitt Romney.

Romney, speaking to reporters on his campaign plane, said he and Netanyahu agreed that Iran must be denied nuclear capabilities but did not agree on specific red lines to confront Tehran.

?I do not believe in the final analysis we will have to use military action,? Romney said. ?I certainly hope we don?t have to. I can?t take that action off the table.?

Friday?s White House phone call followed a meeting between Netanyahu and US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in New York Thursday night. The meeting lasted one hour and 15 minutes and was entirely one-on-one, according to the State Department.

The pair held a lengthy discussion on Iran, and also discussed developments in the broader region and the Israeli-Palestinian peace process.

?It was an open, wide-ranging constructive conversation,? the State Department statement said. The Prime Minister?s Office released no information about that meeting.

Netanyahu also met Friday with Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper, and praised Harper again for Canada?s recent decision to cut ties with Iran.

?I think that what you did, severing ties with Iran, was not only an act of statesmanship, but an act of moral clarity,? he said to the Canadian leader before the meeting.

Harper said Canada wanted to see a peaceful resolution to the Iranian crisis, ?and we work closely with our allies to try and alert the world to the danger this presents and the necessity of dealing with it.?

Later in the day, at the Appeal of Conscience Foundation?s annual dinner in New York, Harper said ?the appeal of our conscience requires us to speak out against what the Iranian regime stands for. Likewise, it requires us to speak in support of the country that its hatred most immediately threatens, the State of Israel.?

Harper said that while Ottawa does not sanction every policy Israel pursues, ?neither its existence nor its policies are responsible for the pathologies present in that part of the world.?

He was also mindful, Harper said, ?of a lesson of history, that those who single out the Jewish people as a target of racial and religious bigotry will inevitably be a threat to all of us. Indeed, those who so target Israel today are, by their own words and deeds, also a threat to all free and democratic societies.?

SATURDAY WOD ? CrossFit Corona

SPRINT DRILLS AND SPRINT TRAINING, SO WEAR YOUR LOW HEELED RUNNING SHOES, SWEATS OR RUNNING TIGHTS OVER YOUR SHORTS.

8-10 100 METER SPRINTS, WALK BACK RECOVER AND RUN AGAIN.

Sprinting became a hot topic in the early 2000s, when research studies seemed to confirm the positive effects of adding sprinting to your workout routine. As compared to slow, steady, lengthy aerobic workouts, sprinting ? full-speed runs for a short period, usually less than one minute ? offers a number of health benefits. The old notion that aerobics, in the form of longer, slower stints of jogging or exercising on a stationary bike or an elliptical machine, is a better path to endurance took a hit when research indicated that sprinting increases both your anaerobic and aerobic capacities.

CARDIO CAPACITY

In 2011, ?The New York Times? quoted exercise physiologist Andrea Chernus, who says that sprinting raises your cardiovascular capacity by pushing your anaerobic threshold. She notes that sprinting offers a harder workout than slow and steady cardio work. As a result of incorporating sprinting into a workout routine, distance runners can increase their speed, and athletes in sports such as baseball and soccer can increase their quickness.

STRENGTH AND WEIGHT LOSS

Longtime coach Michael Paladin, writing for the Health and Fitness Solutions website, says that sprinting will reduce body fat and strengthen you far better than regular aerobic exercise, since sprinting uses the maximum degree of your muscles. After roughly eight seconds of sprinting, your fast twitch muscle fibers are activated. These fibers grow when activated, and can give you a more muscular look, closer to the look of track and field sprinters as opposed to the emaciated look of many distance runners. Sprinting increases human growth hormone in a natural way, which is beneficial for both men and women, writes Paladin. The increase in HGH builds muscle mass, enhances the immune system and promotes weight loss.

CARDIO HEALTH

The brief bursts of high intensity running followed by periods of recovery appear to strengthen the heart. The recovery periods don?t stress your heart as much as long and slow cardio workouts. Plus, sprint workouts take up a shorter period of time and are more fun than the fixed routine of a traditional cardio workout. Research at McMaster University in Canada, cited on the Exercise Physiology website, indicates that you can increase your endurance as well as your speed by incorporating sprints into your workouts. A group of recreational exercisers added sprints on a stationary bike to their normal exercise routine. Doing six sessions of 30-second, flat-out sprints, broken up by recovery periods, over a two-week period of workouts doubled the endurance times of the cyclists, a sure sign of increased heart and lung strength.

CONSIDERATIONS

Paladin recommends sprints of 50 to 100 yards, broken up by rest periods of one to two minutes of walking, not jogging. Repeat five to 10 times. Your total sprint distance should range from 400 to 800 yards. However, if you reach the point where you no longer can sprint flat-out, end the workout. Sprint workouts can be done two or three times per week, depending upon your exercise routine on the other days. However, if you are older and/or just returning to an exercise routine, start out gradually and work up to a full sprint workout over a period of weeks or months. And always check with your doctor before commencing a new exercise program.

Shortage of Engineers Is Causing 'Crisis' In Tech Industry
A lack of qualified workers in the tech industry is causing a crisis, says Microsoft. The firm has started lobbying in Washington, calling for a new approach to science, technology, engineering and math teaching at schools, and warning that if changes are not made, the U.S. will lose out to other, better-prepared nations.

World powers push Syria's opposition to unite

UNITED NATIONS (AP) ? Efforts to draw together the fragmented foes of Syrian President Bashar Assad could lead to direct talks between the leader's regime and his opponents, a key official said after talks on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly.

Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari on Friday proposed plans to broker discussions for a political transition in Syria ? amid the paralysis at the U.N. Security Council which has cast a pall over the annual gathering of world leaders in New York.

Zebari told The Associated Press in an interview that he made the offer to bring together Syria's regime and opposition at a meeting Friday between nine representatives of anti-Assad groups and the Friends of Syria ? a coalition which includes the United States, the European Union and the Arab League.

He acknowledged that the U.N. and Arab League joint envoy on Syria, Lakhdar Brahimi, would need to take the plan forward.

Establishing a more coherent opposition is seen as a means of increasing pressure on the Syrian leadership amid Russia and China's decisions to veto three Western-backed resolutions aimed at forcing Assad to end the violence.

Rebels on Friday made their broadest assault yet to drive Assad's forces out of Aleppo, Syria's largest city. Activists claim that since the 18-month-old conflict began, more than 30,000 people have been killed in the fighting.

Syria's opposition has been criticized as hopelessly fractured and unable to coalesce around a transition plan that was adopted by members of the U.N. Security Council in Geneva over the summer, though Western officials say they are beginning to see tentative signs of progress.

Revolutionary councils in cities including Damascus, Homs, Aleppo, Idlib and Deir al-Zour are becoming increasingly organized, U.S. officials insist. In Idlib, in northwestern Syria, and Deir al-Zour, in the country's east, the local councils are taking charge of municipal duties, restoring power supplies and cleaning streets.

Talks Friday focused on efforts to boost cooperation between the rival groups, provide them with millions of dollars more in non-lethal equipment, and help them cement authority in areas freed from the Assad regime's control.

"It is encouraging to see some progress toward greater opposition unity, but we all know there is more work to be done," U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton told the meeting.

Mouaz Moustafa, a 27-year-old activist with the Washington-based "Coalition for a Democratic Syria," which lobbies on behalf of the civilian councils and was involved in the talks, said the local groups could provide the roots of a post-Assad Syria if they are supported with funding.

"It will be undermined if it's not coupled with financial support," he said. "You have civilian councils right now. If you don't help them, you miss an opportunity. Without money, they lose credibility, viability and power."

He said in one instance, France had supplied about $13,000 to the Maarat al-Nuaman civilian council, in northwestern Syria, which allowed them to clean streets, rebuild a bread factory and pay for policemen.

Moustafa said the councils were crucial for the country to re-emerge under civilian rule. If they failed, it would risk emboldening military commanders to create their own fiefdoms in liberated areas, or Islamic extremists ? better armed and with money ? to set up their own power centers.

U.S. officials acknowledged the importance of helping civilian activists, rather than fighters, to prepare to provide services when the country's leadership falls.

"People with guns who don't know how to have bread baked are quickly going to lose credibility on the street. People with guns who can't make the lights come back on are going to quickly lose credibility on the street," said a senior U.S. official, who was not authorized to publicly discuss details of the talks.

During talks Friday, Clinton pledged $15 million in new non-lethal equipment ? mainly communications equipment ? and $30 in million humanitarian assistance to Syria's opposition. In total, the U.S. has offered $130 million in humanitarian supplies and about $40 million in equipment such as including satellite-linked computers, telephones and cameras. Britain and France have also offered millions of dollars worth of aid supplies and equipment.

At the General Assembly on Friday, Turkey's foreign minister, Ahmet Davutoglu warned of the risks that Syria's civil war could spread to other Middle East nations. "The Syrian regime deploys every instrument to turn the legitimate struggle of the Syrian people into a sectarian war, which will engulf the entire region into flames," he said.

On Saturday, nations including Uruguay, Denmark, Portugal, Sudan and Angola were scheduled to address the assembly.

Iran president says regretful of arrest of adviser

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) ? Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has called the detention of his top press adviser "regretful".

The official Irna news agency quoted Ahmadinejad as saying that he would look into the arrest of Ali Akbar Javanfekr.

Authorities on Wednesday took Javanfekr into custody to begin serving a six-month sentence for publishing material deemed insulting to the country's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

It is the first reaction by Ahmadinejad to the case.

The arrest is seen part of ongoing feud between Ahmadinejad and his conservative rivals ahead of June presidential elections in which Ahmadinejad is not allowed to run, under the law.

Hooniverse Asks- What's the Next Automotive Purchase You're ...

Remember back a couple of ?years ago when the economy looked like something out of a documentary on North Korea? Yeah, that sucked, and I?ll bet most of you didn?t plan any major durable goods purchases, especially ones that you parked in the garage. But things are looking up for many of us, and perhaps now there?s plenty of pent up demand for replacing that creaky washer and dryer, or maybe adding to the fleet. And if that last part is true for you, we want to know what you?re itching to pull the trigger on.

Truth be told, there are a lot of cars out today ? models that weren?t available even three years ago ? that are like holy balls amazing. Ford?s new Fusion is arguably about the best looking mid-sizer you can buy, and it offers a selection of drivetrain choices that would put 31 Flavors to shame. Not only that, but it seems like now is still a great time to snap up some classic iron, as prices for cars like Ferrari 308s, Triumph TR6s, two-seat T-birds and a bunch of others are just now starting to on the bottom step of the escalator, the perfect opportunity to get in, enjoy, and later make a few bucks.

So what are you planning to do with all that hard-earned cash cluttering up your bank account? Are you going to buy something with wheels? Or maybe you?ve had your eye on something that allows you to work on those wheels, maybe a TIG welder or new air compressor? Let?s not limit this conversation to cars and trucks alone, but be inclusive of all your big ticket garage plans. Of all those possibilities, what?automotive purchase are you next planning to make?

World stocks rise amid China easing hopes

BANGKOK (AP) ? World stocks moved modestly higher Thursday, underpinned by speculation that China's central bank will ease monetary policy next week when Chinese and Hong Kong markets are closed for an extended holiday.

European stocks, which took a beating Wednesday, clawed back some lost ground. Britain's FTSE 100 rose nearly 0.2 percent to 5,777.06. Germany's DAX rose 0.4 percent to 7,302.57 and France's CAC-40 gained 0.4 percent to 3,427.69.

Wall Street appeared set for gains. Dow Jones industrial futures added 0.3 percent to 13,388 while S&P 500 futures rose 0.3 percent to 1,431.80.

The positive tone was set earlier in Asia, helped by expectations the People's Bank of China will soon take more steps to ease a slowdown in the world's No. 2 economy.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng climbed more than 1.1 percent to 20,762.29 and mainland China's Shanghai Composite Index jumped 2.6 percent to 2,056.32. The smaller Shenzhen Composite Index also gained 2.6 percent to 837.96.

South Korea's Kospi increased 0.4 percent to 1,988.70. Benchmarks in Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand and Indonesia also rose.

"We don't know what will happen over the holiday. We do not have enough time to respond so that is why we are doing some portfolio management and risk management this week," said Linus Yip, strategist at First Shanghai Securities in Hong Kong.

Japan's Nikkei 225 rose about 0.5 percent to 8,949.87, a day before the release of key economic data for August. Analysts at DBS Bank Ltd. in Singapore said industrial production for Japan is expected to contract and retail sales growth will likely stay negative.

"Global demand conditions have remained weak and the outlook is subdued and uncertain. Adding to this is the recent escalation of China-Japan tensions, which could lead to further deterioration in export demand from China in the short term," DBS said in a market commentary.

All Nippon Airways fell 2.4 percent in Tokyo, a day after the airline said the number of seats cancelled by Japanese customers who had planned to travel to China reached about 40,000 for the September-November period, Kyodo News reported.

Violent protests on the streets of Athens and Madrid sent stocks sharply lower on Wednesday, reigniting concerns over Europe's ability to implement the measures needed to deal with its big debts.

The latest turmoil to afflict the 17 nation euro currency union began late Tuesday, when clashes broke out at a demonstration in Madrid that was protesting new austerity measures from the Spanish government. That was followed Wednesday by a general strike in Greece, which also turned violent.

Benchmark oil for November delivery was up 14 cents to $90.12 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell $1.39 to finish at $89.98 per barrel on the Nymex on Wednesday.

In currencies, the euro rose to $1.2875 from $1.2859 late Wednesday in New York. The dollar fell to 77.68 yen from 77.72 yen.

Besides being masters of serving high quality meals, Dennis Johnston and Monica Bauch?, proprietors of Fid Resto (1569 Dresden Row, 422-9162), have proven themselves keenly aware of their place in the Hali restaurant market, and have extended their core business into interesting and creative side lines. Last spring, the restaurant started serving ?back door Pad Thai?---anytime the kitchen?s open, which is from 11:30am through the evening hours, you can simply knock on the Queen Street kitchen door and ask for an order of Pad Thai to go, and the cooks will whip it up for a mere 10 bucks. Bauch? says the back door Pad Thai has been wonderfully successful but, thinking of the coming change of season, wonders if people will continue to come when it means waiting outside in the cold. Then, she answers her own question: ?A lot of people call ahead to order, so they don?t have to wait. Or, if there?s room, they can sit at the bar.? Problem solved. It?s also time to start thinking of signing up for Johnston?s cooking classes, either Thai or French cuisine, generally taught on Mondays when the restaurant is closed, but possibly other days, depending on how fall hours get established. The classes are hands-on, and are not simply a ?watch Dennis cook? affair: students handle the food and kitchen equipment themselves, as Johnston walks them through an appetizer, a main course and a dessert, then the group sits down and eats their creations. Bauch? says that wannabe students can wait til the classes are officially offered, but it makes sense for those interested to start forming their own groups---at least six people, but only 10 can fit in the Fid kitchen---now, and calling the restaurant to figure out a mutually agreeable schedule. I can?t think of a better excuse for a weekly friend outing. And---how sad is this?---it?s already time to begin making plans for the workplace holiday events. Bauch? suggests a night at Fid. A typical company outing might be consist of 30 employees, split into three groups of 10, each rotating through a cooking class in the kitchen, a lesson in drink-making behind the bar and a wine-tasting on the other side of the bar. The defining word here is ?flexible.? It?s striking how much Johnston and Bauch? are willing to work with customers to make everyone happy. On their 12th year of business, with that attitude, they?ll no doubt continue their success.

Exercise Does a Body - and a Mind - Good - Brain -Public Health -

? Brain ? ? Public Health ? Sep 25, 2012

We?ve heard it time and time again: exercise is good for us. And it?s not just good for physical health - research shows that daily physical activity can also boost our mental health. But what actually accounts for the association between exercise and mental health?

A new article in Clinical Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science, explores whether certain psychosocial factors may help to explain the benefits of daily physical activity for adolescents? mental health.

Karin Monshouwer of the Trimbos Institute in the Netherlands and colleagues at Trimbos and VU University Medical Center specifically wanted to examine two existing explanations for the link between exercise and mental health. The self-image hypothesis suggests that physical activity has positive effects on body weight and body structure, leading to positive feedback from peers and improved self-image, and ultimately improving mental health. The social interaction hypothesis, on the other hand, holds that it?s the social aspects of physical activity - such as social relationships and mutual support among team members - that contribute to the positive effects of exercise on mental health.

Monshouwer and her colleagues surveyed over 7000 Dutch students, ages 11 to 16. The adolescents completed validated surveys aimed at assessing their physical activity, mental health problems, body weight perception, and participation in organized sports. The researchers also gathered data on the adolescents? age, gender, and socioeconomic status; whether they lived at home with their parents; and whether they lived in an urban area.

The researchers found that adolescents who were physically inactive or who perceived their bodies as either ?too fat? or ?too thin? were at greater risk for both internalizing problems (e.g., depression, anxiety) and externalizing problems (e.g., aggression, substance abuse). Adolescents who participated in organized sports, on the other hand, were at lower risk for mental health problems.

Confirming both the self-image hypothesis and the social interaction hypothesis, adolescents? body weight perception (i.e., ?too heavy,? ?good,? or ?too thin?) and sports club membership each partially accounted for the relationship between physical activity and mental health, even after taking adolescents? backgrounds into account.

These results suggest that certain psychosocial factors - body image and social interaction - may help to explain at least part of the connection between physical activity and mental health. The researchers acknowledge, however, that other factors, such as the physiological effects of exercise, are probably also at work.

?We think that these findings are important for policymakers and anyone who works in healthcare or prevention. Our findings indicate that physical activity may be one effective tool for the prevention of mental health problems in adolescence,? says Monshouwer.

Monshouwer and her colleagues hope that future studies will be able to examine similar questions while following participants over time. Such longitudinal studies could help researchers to understand how physical activity type and context might influence the relationship between exercise and mental health.

Clinical Psychological Science - a new journal from APS - publishes advances in clinical science and provides a venue for cutting-edge research across a wide range of conceptual views, approaches, and topics. The journal encompasses many core domains that have defined clinical psychology, but also boundary-crossing advances that integrate and make contact with diverse disciplines and that may not easily be found in traditional clinical psychology journals. Among the key topics are research on the underlying mechanisms and etiologies of psychological health and dysfunction; basic and applied work on the diagnosis, assessment, treatment, and prevention of mental illness; service delivery; and promotion of well-being.

MR is Going to Korea: Gangnam Style!

Tyler and I will both be in South Korea in early October for the Asian launch of Marginal Revolution University. Tyler will be speaking at the World Knowledge Forum (Oct. 9-11). The WKF is known as the Asian Davos. In addition to Tyler, the speakers include Paul Krugman, Daron Acemoglu, Malcolm Gladwell, Cass Sunstein, Dani Rodrik, a number of other well known economists and social scientists and a host of political and business leaders.

Coincidentally, Google invited me to speak in South Korea on Oct. 9. I will be speaking on Innovation at the Google Big Tent event in Gangnam! I will also be on several panels at the WKF on the 10th and 11th.

Neither Tyler nor I have been to Korea before so we are looking forward to the trip. Recommendations welcome in the comments.

We are committed to making MRU a global player in online education.

Why is Barack Obama's signature on Mars?

Curiosity drops a few rather big names in recent images taken with its MAHLI camera.

Curiosity drops a few rather big names in recent images taken with its MAHLI (Mars Hand Lens Imager) camera: here we see a plaque affixed to its surface bearing the names and signatures of U.S. President Barack Obama, Vice President Joe Biden, Office of Science and Technology Director John Holdren, NASA Administrator Charles Bolden and other key figures responsible for making the Mars Exploration Program possible.

You never know? even on another planet it can?t hurt to have friends in high places!
?
The image was captured by MAHLI on September 19, the 44th sol of the MSL mission. (See the original raw downlink?here.)

The rectangular plaque is made of anodized aluminum, measuring 3.94 inches (100 mm) high by 3.23 inches (82 mm) wide. It?s?attached to the front left side of Curiosity?s deck with four bolts. (Explore Curiosity in 3D?here.)

Dust, pebbles and variously-sized bits of Mars can be seen scattered around the plaque and deck, leftover detritus from the rover?s landing.

The complete list of signatures is:

Barack Obama, President, United States of America

Joe Biden, Vice President

John P. Holdren, Director, Office of Science and Technology Policy

Charles F. Bolden, Jr., Administrator, National Aeronautics and Space Administration

Edward J. Weiler, Associate Administrator, Science Mission Directorate (2008?2011)

James Green, Director, Planetary Sciences Division

Doug McCuistion, Director, Mars Exploration Program

Michael Meyer, Program Scientist, Mars Exploration Program

David Lavery, Program Executive, Mars Science Laboratory

In another image taken on the same sol, Curiosity shows some national pride with a circular medallion decorated with the stars and stripes of the American flag. The 68-mm-wide circular aluminum plate is affixed to one of the rover?s?rocker arms. It?s just?one of its four ?mobility logos? ? the others having the NASA logo, the JPL logo and the Curiosity mission logo.

The main purpose of Curiosity?s MAHLI camera is to acquire close-up, high-resolution views of rocks and soil at the rover?s Gale Crater field site. Developed for NASA by?Malin Space Science Systems?in San Diego, CA, the camera is capable of focusing on any target at distances of about 0.8 inch (2.1 centimeters) to infinity, providing versatility for other uses, such as views of the rover itself from different angles.

Fast algorithm extracts and compares document meaning

ScienceDaily (Sep. 25, 2012) ? A computer program could compare two documents and work spot the differences in their meaning using a fast semantic algorithm developed by information scientists in Poland.

Writing in the International Journal of Intelligent Information and Database Systems, Andrzej Sieminski of the Technical University of Wroclaw, explains that extracting meaning and calculating the level of semantic similarity between two pieces of texts is a very difficult task, without human intervention. There have been various methods proposed by computer scientists for addressing this problem, but they all suffer from computational complexity, he says.

Sieminski has now attempted to reduce this complexity by merging a computationally efficient statistical approach to text analysis with a semantic component. Tests of the algorithm on English and Polish tests work well. The test set consisted of 4,890 English sentences with 142,116 words and 11,760 Polish sentences with 184,524 words scraped from online services via their newsfeeds over the course of five days. Sieminski points out that the complexity of the algorithm used on the Polish documents required an additional level of sophistication in terms of computing word means and disambiguation.

Traditional "manual" methods of indexing simply cannot now cope with the vast quantities of information generated on a daily basis by humanity as a whole in scientific research more specifically. The new algorithm once optimised could radically change the way in which we make archived documents searchable and allow knowledge to be extracted far more readily than is possible with standard indexing and search tools.

The approach also circumvents three critical problems faced by most users of conventional search engines: First, the lack of familiarity with the advanced search options of search engines, with a semantic algorithm advanced options become almost unnecessary. Secondly, the rigid nature of the options that are unable to catch the subtle nuance of user information needs, again a tool that understands the meaning of a search and the meaning of the results it offers avoids this problem. Finally, the unwillingness or unacceptably long time necessary to type a long query, semantically aware search will require only simply input.

Sieminski points out that the key virtue of the research is the idea of using the statistical similarity measures to assess semantic similarity. He explains that semantic similarity of words could be inferred from the WordNet database. He proposes using this database only during text indexing. "Indexing is done only once so the inevitably long processing time is not an issue," he says. "From that point on we use only statistical algorithms, which are fast and high performance."

Verizon has no plans to re-lock iPhone 5's GSM and 3G sides

Verizon has no plans to relock iPhone 5's GSM and 3G sides

When we learned that Verizon wouldn't lock the GSM-related components of the iPhone 5, we were waiting for a "gotcha" moment. Surely the carrier would clamp down and steer us back towards its more expensive roaming plans, right? Not according to Verizon spokeswoman Brenda Raney: she says there's no plans to lock Apple's handset at a later point. In other words, you should be free to use a Verizon-locked iPhone 5 on any compatible GSM and HSPA+ networks for as long as you'd like, including with AT&T and Canadian carriers. Of course, this still brings the caveats of having to both buy a Verizon model, either at full price or with a contract attached, and track down a nano-SIM for the carrier of choice. It could nonetheless settle the question of what carrier to pick if you regularly need a passport when you travel -- especially knowing that neither AT&T nor Sprint will be quite so open-minded.
