The question was:
How do others cope with the lack of food and drink places on many of the Caminos?
Having just walked from Toulouse, where there seems to be even more villages without shops or bars than there are in Spain, and I know there are many in Spain, I found I was carrying food and drink for the day, emergency supplies in case there was no food in the evening, supplies to cope with Sundays and Mondays!! It was only when I stopped that I realised how heavy my food bag had become. Does anyone have some secret coping mechanism? how do others manage?

LEDs of the future may owe their shine to one of nature's brightest sparks, the firefly, which uses its bioluminescence to attract a mate.
Many insects have evolved light-bending biological features. The figeater beetle's bright green iridescence is achieved by selectively reflecting light, and moths' eyes contain antire?ective structures which boost light collection to let them go about their nocturnal lives. Like firefly bioluminescence, these features rely on tiny biological structures that selectively shift light either according to its colour or its polarisation.?For example, if the wavelength of the incoming light matches size of the structures, it is reflected at odd angles, altering the perceived colour. The effect is similar to that of a diffraction grating or of polarised sunglasses.
Fireflies use this property to snag a mate: the brighter a firefly shines, the better its chances of attracting romantic attention. The light-bending nanostructures - known as lanterns, located on the outer surface of their light emitting organs - help send light into the environment efficiently by reducing the optical impedance between the air and lantern. This lets the insects?maximise their light output while minimising their energy output.?In all animals that rely on bioluminescence, efficient versions of these nanostructures have been selected for over hundreds of millions of years.
But researchers at the Biophotonics Lab of the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology found another use for them: a better LED lightbulb.
Led by Ki-Hun Jeong, the team measured the dimensions of the firefly nanostructures with an electron microscope, then built replica structures onto the surface of an LED lens. Their new LED lens transmitted 3 per cent?more light than a traditional smooth lens, a small gain, but potentially significant in squeezing even more efficiency out of LED bulbs that are already dramatically more efficient than traditional iridescent bulbs.

Watching for the power of the storm yet to come in Long Beach, N.Y. More Photos ?
Like a hand pushing water in a bathtub, the winds of a hurricane push the water of the Atlantic Ocean. When the windblown water runs up against land, the water piles up and flows inland. That describes a storm surge.
?It?s almost a little bit like a tsunami,? said Klaus H. Jacob, a scientist at Columbia University?s Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory.
When Hurricane Sandy makes landfall late Monday or early Tuesday, the pulse of windblown water will be ?in a word, bad,? Dr. Jacob said. ?It?s of course still somewhat uncertain. It all depends on the exact timing.?
Storm surges like those accompanying Hurricane Sandy as it churns north are, at their simplest, a function of strong winds driving too much water into too small a space. But other factors, some of which will come into play as this storm approaches the New York area, can combine to make surges higher and more destructive, experts said.
?A storm surge is really caused by one thing,? said Pat Fitzpatrick, an associate research professor at Mississippi State University who studies the phenomenon. ?When a storm is approaching land, it starts to encounter shallow water. The water tends to pile up.?
The height of a surge depends to a great extent on how shallow the water is near the coast. ?The shallower the water is, for longer distance, the more vulnerable an area is,? Mr. Fitzpatrick said.
The New York area has extensive shallow water offshore, and was expected to see some of the largest surges ? National Weather Service computer models were predicting a storm surge of 6 to 11 feet at Battery Park at the lower end of Manhattan. The surge also could coincide with high tide at about 9 p.m. Monday, with tides even higher than usual because of the full moon.
?It?s kind of a worst-case scenario for the New York Harbor area,? said Alan Cope, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Mount Holly, N.J.
Hurricane Sandy is much larger, with greater surge potential, than the devastating Tropical Storm Irene last year, with winds already up to 60 miles an hour over an area more than 500 miles northeast of its center. Adding to the potential for damage was the hurricane?s unusual track. The expected path northwest will trap water against the shores of New York and New Jersey, Mr. Cope said.
?It?s going to blow the water from east to the west and pile it up in Raritan Bay and also pile it up in the western end of Long Island Sound,? he said.
Many Atlantic hurricanes move parallel to the coast for long distances and then, pushed by high-level winds, veer northeast, eventually ?spinning out,? or losing their energy, over the North Atlantic. But by the time it nears New York on Monday, Hurricane Sandy will have traveled hundreds of miles from the coast for several days, picking up enormous amounts of water over the open ocean.
The storm?s winds, which are rotating in counterclockwise, are creating an area of strong ocean waves north and east of the storm?s center. ?That amplifies the surge,? said Louis Uccellini, director of the National Centers for Environmental Prediction, part of the National Weather Service.
As Hurricane Sandy approaches New York, forecasters expect it to hit a roadblock. Instead of veering northeast and out to sea, the storm will be forced to move west by a strong and persistent region of high-pressure air over southeastern Canada and southern Greenland.
?It?s quite unusual to have this westward component of motion to a hurricane track,? said Jeff Masters, director of meteorology for the Web site Weather Underground.
As it moves west, the hurricane is expected to make landfall in New Jersey, perpendicular to the coast. Such a head-on hit can produce worse surges than a glancing blow because more water can be driven into estuaries and harbors.
?The bottom line for New York and New Jersey and Long Island Sound is that they are going to have the worst of the surge and coastal inundation,? Mr. Uccellini said.
But strong surges are only one aspect of this storm that makes it potentially deadly, he added.

LONDON (Reuters) - Religious rivals of the Protestant reformation, murderous royal patrons and other 15th-16th century power brokers are brought to life in a new London art show telling the tale of northern Europe's renaissance.
Some of the characters on show in drawings and paintings put together for "The Northern Renaissance: Duerer to Holbein" at the Queen's Gallery, Buckingham Palace come straight from the pages of Booker prize-winning novelist Hilary Mantel's "Wolf Hall", with Martin Luther, Thomas More and Henry VIII playing key roles.
Works by Albrecht Duerer, Lucas Cranach the Elder, Francois Clouet, Leonardo da Vinci, Hans Holbein the Younger and others capture images of people and convey some of the drama from an intense period of religious, political, artistic and philosophical upheaval which convulsed northern Europe.
Co-curator Kate Heard told Reuters in front of a drawing of Thomas More's family that widespread knowledge among visitors to the exhibition of the grisly end which awaited people such as More and his family added a certain frisson to the show.
"When you look at a portrait of (Thomas) More, you can't take out of it what happened to him," Heard said. "It's wonderful to feel almost as if you're meeting people you know well."
More, who rose to become Henry VIII's chancellor was executed in 1535 for refusing to recognize Henry's divorce and the English's church's break with Rome.
As well as the period drama's British actors, the show also tracks the artistic changes across Europe during the 15th and 16th centuries, including innovations in technique as well as technological advances, such as the improvement in oil paints in northern Europe, which eventually made its way to Italy.
The show capitalizes on a royal collection which is astounding in its breadth and treasure with more than 120 paintings, drawings, prints, sculpture, armor, tapestries, miniatures, as well as gold and silver cups.
A small room off one of the galleries contains books edited by thinker and humanist Desiderius Erasmus, More's "Utopia" and a signed copy of Henry's attack on Luther: "Defence of the Seven Sacraments against Martin Luther".
"There is enough to make a major contribution to the story of this time," co-curator Lucy Whitaker told Reuters of the collection, which is owned by the British monarch.
The show explores other places besides Henry's court, where Hans Holbein arrived in search of work and patronage from a Germany riven with a religious division that would disenfranchise artists normally commissioned for altar pieces and other religious themes.
It trundles through 15th and 16th century art in the Netherlands - including Pieter Brueghel the Elder's "Massacre of the Innocents", has a section on drawings by Duerer - including an eight-piece Apocalypse series - and also examines art in the Holy Roman Empire.
The Northern Renaissance: Duerer to Holbein is on at the Queen's Gallery from Nov 2 to April 14.

That's what researchers at Carnegie Mellon are working on with their new Mind's Eye program, reports Phys.org. They are developing software that not only records what people are doing, but can predict what they are about to do, and can deduce what happened off camera.
It's kind of like the TV show "Person of Interest" but for real.
For instance, if a woman enters a building without a box and leaves with one, the Mind?s Eye program can deduce that the box was taken from the building. Or if a person walks up to another person and holds out an object, the program can predict that the other person will take the object.
That sounds simple enough for a human mind, but the tech behind it pretty complicated. Researchers are generating 3D models of human activities. They have to teach the software to recognized these activities. Then teach it to recognize these activities during a live video.
Such software would have all kinds of uses for the military, police and home security.
Carnegie Mellon is one of twelve research teams and three commercial integrators participating in the five-year program that began in 2010 to develop smart video software. It's sponsored by DARPA's Information Innovation Office.

BAGHDAD (AP) ? Iraqi insurgents unleashed a string of bombings and other attacks primarily targeting the country's Shiite community on Saturday, leaving at least 40 dead in a challenge to government efforts to promote a sense of stability by preventing attacks during a major Muslim holiday.
The bloodshed appeared to be the worst in Iraq since Sept. 9, when insurgents launched a wave of bombings and other attacks that left at least 92 dead in one of the country's bloodiest days this year.
The attacks underscored the difficulties facing the country's leadership as it struggles to keep its citizens safe. Authorities had increased security in hopes of preventing attacks during the four-day Eid al-Adha celebrations, when people are off work and families gather in public places.
The deadliest attacks struck in the evening in the Shiite neighborhood of Sadr City. Police said a car packed with explosives blew up near a market, killing 12 people and wounding 27. Half an hour later, a second car bomb went off in one of Sadr city's bus stations, killing 10 and injuring 31.
Earlier in the day, a bomb exploded near playground equipment that had been set up for the holiday in a market on the capital's outskirts in the eastern neighborhood of Bawiya. Police officials said eight people were killed, including four children. Another 24 people, including children, were wounded, they added.
"Nobody expected this explosion because our neighborhood has been living in peace, away from the violence hitting the rest of the capital," said Bassem Mohammed, a 35-year-old father of three in the neighborhood who was startled by the blast.
"We feel sad for the children who thought that they would spend a happy time during Eid, but instead ended up getting killed or hurt."
Elsewhere, a bomb attached to a bus carrying Iranian Shiite pilgrims killed five people and wounded nine, according to police. The bomb, hidden on the underside of the bus, detonated as the pilgrims were heading to a Shiite shrine in Baghdad to mark the holiday.
Authorities have said they planned to increase the number of checkpoints, shut some roads and deploy extra personnel during the holiday period.
They are also relying more on undercover intelligence agents, said Lt. Col. Saad Maan Ibrahim, a spokesman for the interior ministry. He emphasized that both bombings took place on the edge of the capital rather than in densely populated areas.
"The terrorists apparently weren't able to get to the heart of the city. So they chose to attack soft targets on the outskirts," he said.
In the northern city of Mosul, gunmen broke into the houses of two Shabak families, killing a boy and his parents in one and a mother and daughter in the other, according to police. A bomb exploded near the house of another Shabak family, wounding six family members.
Shabaks are ethnically Turkomen and Shiite by religion. Most Shabaks were driven out of Mosul by Sunni militants during the sectarian fighting a few years ago.
In Tuz Khormato, about 210 kilometers (130 miles) north of Baghdad, a car bomb exploded near in a neighborhood with a Turkomen Shiite majority. Mayor Shalal Abdoul said 11 people were wounded, including three children.
Medics in nearby hospitals confirmed the casualties. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the media.
Eid al-Adha, or Feast of the Sacrifice, is a major Muslim holiday that commemorates what Muslims believe was the Prophet Abraham's willingness to sacrifice his son Ismail, the Biblical Ishmael, as a test of his faith from God. Christians and Jews believe another of Abraham's sons, Isaac, was the one almost sacrificed.
The holiday, which began Friday, marks the end of the hajj pilgrimage to Mecca. Muslims worldwide typically slaughter lambs and other animals to commemorate the holiday, sharing some of the meat with the poor.
Violence has ebbed across Iraq, but insurgents frequently attack security forces and civilians in an attempt to undermine the country's Shiite-led government.
Holidays are a particular time of concern for security forces. A wave of attacks shortly before another Muslim holiday in August, Eid al-Fitr, killed more than 90 people in one of the deadliest days in Iraq this year.

Video game addiction ? also known as problem video gaming ? is an issue the media loves to hype (along with ?Internet addiction?). Such gaming addiction is hard to define, but like pornography, some professionals say they ?know it when they see it.?
One of the possible hypotheses put forth about these kinds of technology addictions back in 1999 was that what we were seeing wasn?t a behavioral addiction at all. Instead, it was suggested we were seeing the predictable adaptive behaviors of humans to unfamiliar stimuli in their lives. In this case, that stimuli was entertainment technology.
Emerging evidence suggests that this may be the case. And the really good news?
Video game addiction may resolve itself on its own ? simply with time.
The new research was a three-stage, longitudinal study designed to measure participants over an 18-month period. A total of 393 participants took part in an online survey advertised on Australian gaming websites. They were then asked to complete followup surveys at 6-month and 18-month intervals, with 117 participants doing so.
The surveys collected demographic information, video game playing behaviors, administered a problematic video game playing test, and depression, anxiety, and stress scales.
So what did the researchers find?
At baseline, there were 37 self-identified problem gamers, and 80 self-identified normal gamers. A criterion validity check found that problem gamers scored significantly higher on a test of problem video gaming symptoms (i.e., PVGT) at baseline than normal gamers. [...]
Both groups experienced a significant decline in problem gaming symptoms over an 18-month period, controlling for age, gaming activity, and psychopathological symptoms.
In other words, the self-identified problem gamers at the beginning of the study significantly reduced their problem gaming behavior 18 months later. So much so, they looked just like the ?normal? gamers at the end of the study ? their video gaming addiction had simply disappeared.
Previous research has found that problem gaming as a teen is the strongest predictor of future problem gaming as an adult. The current study, however, didn?t look at teens ? only adults.
Nonetheless, the researchers have some theories as to why they saw problem video gaming disappear:
An explanation for this general decline in problem gaming symptoms in both groups is not readily apparent based on these data although the concept of maturing out over time is well established in the addiction literature. Inspection of problem gaming trajectories may suggest that a spontaneous recovery effect occurred among all gamers, as has been observed in studies that have monitored problem gamblers not receiving treatment.
It may be that problem gaming symptoms at baseline generally represented the most severe stage of respondents? problem gaming habit, at which point problem symptoms remitted naturally over the course of the study.
The new study suggests that for most adults, video game addiction may very well resolve itself on its own over time.
If you can?t wait (or your relationship or work or studies can?t wait) for this possibility, it never hurts to see a mental health professional for a problem like this. A therapist can still help with problems of this nature, even if it?s not a formal diagnosis.

One of the largest high school districts in Texas is under fire for requiring students to wear ID cards embedded with microchips that allow them to be located in an instant. School officials say the district was losing almost $2 million a year because of poor attendance. NBC's Janet Shamlian reports.
By Bob Sullivan
Privacy's last stand is taking place not far from The Alamo in Texas right now, to hear some people tell it. Two schools in San Antonio have begun tracking students using radio-enabled computer chips embedded in their ID cards, allowing administrators to know the precise whereabouts of their charges on campus -- be it in class, in the bathroom, in a stairwell or AWOL -- all while sitting at a computer.??
The stated purpose of the so-called RFID ID cards is simple: Because state aid is based on attendance, and the chips help schools count kids, tracking equals funding. The district also says the technology makes kids safer.
But at the intersection of technology, parenting, schools and privacy rights, things frequently get messy. Are schools merely modernizing, or are they teaching children to silently accept a Big Brother state? Should parents be happy that teachers can more easily keep tabs on their kids, or should they worry that vast databases of detailed location information might one day harm the children?
Technology with potential privacy implications is shoehorning its way into schools around the country, creating thorny issues at every turn.
Should district be allowed to demand middle-schooler's Facebook password?
Before San Antonio's implementation, Houston ran a trial in 2010 and found the RFID ID cards did in fact help boost attendance figures. RFID tracking has also been tried in California, where one preschool embeds chips in kids' clothes. Biometrics -- usually fingerprints -- have been used by some schools. In Carroll Country, Md., some kids now flash their palms instead of cash to pay for food. And the Daily Princetonian earlier this month revealed that new keyless locks opened by ID cards installed in dorm rooms feed a central database that records each time students enter buildings and rooms. University officials responded to the story the way every school does -- and nearly every data collection authority does -- by?saying officials don't monitor the data but they reserve the right to access it in an emergency.
Children desensitized to being watched?
The definition of an emergency can be dicey, however, and that logic has already led to some celebrated privacy and technology lawsuits. Several districts around the nation have run into trouble for demanding students' social media passwords or asking to rummage through kids' cellphones without a warrant.?
A few parents in San Antonio are putting up a stink about the RFID cards, arguing that schools shouldn't be a playground for new privacy-invading technologies. A group calling itself "Chip Free Schools" has tried to organize opposition. Another parent is objecting on religious grounds.
Gov't agencies, colleges demand applicants' Facebook passwords
Chip Free Schools has received support from a larger privacy advocacy group -- Consumers Against Supermarket Privacy Invasion and Numbering, or CASPIAN, which was formed more than 10 years ago to protest the proliferation of supermarket loyalty cards.
"RFID is used to track factory inventory and monitor farm animals," said Dr. Katherine Albrecht, director of CASPIAN. "Schools, of all places, should be teaching children how to participate in a free democratic society, not conditioning them to be tracked like cattle."
Of course, the fight against loyalty cards didn't get very far, and privacy concerns may take a back seat as schools are tempted by new technologies that help them manage their districts, warns Jay Stanley, a senior policy analyst with the American Civil Liberty Union?s Speech, Privacy and Technology Project.
It's often hard to see the long-term privacy issues created by technology through the fog created by short-term gains, he warned. Location tracking can have a chilling effect on casual congregating, for example -- kids who consider forming a club may skip the idea once they are aware that administrators will know about every meeting.?
"The consequences of tracking are that as people become more aware they are being tracked, they become less free," he said.
There's also concern that students who learn to accept tracking as teen-agers will enter adulthood desensitized to being watched by government agencies.
"Schools shape children not just by what they tell them, but also what we demonstrate to them," he said. "We don't want to see the next generation of citizens growing up thinking about this kind of invisible eye in the sky."
Teens and parents say a school district in Texas has no right to use a new ID badge, referred to as the radio frequency identification system, to track their movement on campus. WOAI's Darlene Dorsey reports.
'Prisoners in their own schools'
There are also several practical problems with tracking students and collecting data on them, Stanley warned.? The practice can provide a false sense of security, for example, as kids might find a way to separate themselves from their RFID chips ("As a parent, I would wonder, do they know where your kid is, or do they know where your kid's chip is?" Stanley said). While the data might be collected for one use -- paying for lunch -- there might be mission creep. One day, it could be used as part of an adjudication procedure to find witnesses to a fight, for example. Long term, perhaps it will end up in the hands of political operatives, forcing a future presidential candidate to explain why he missed so many history classes.?There's some concern?-- theoretical at this point -- that the radio signal sent by the chip or the data collected could be stolen by others who might harm children.?And there are worries about the cost.
NBC News' Charles Hadlock on the school's controversial use of tracking technology
"You should ask, 'Is this just a gimmicky solution to a problem that's been solved already, like using lunch money,? and the funds might be better spent on education?? " he said.
Katie Deolloz, who is helping coordinating RFID ID card opposition for CASPIAN, argued that the switch to an RFID card was really motivated by money.
"Students deserve to be treated with dignity and respect, not forced to wear microchips that track them like cattle," she said. "(The district) has spent upward of $500,000 solving a non-problem. Relying on RFID to track and monitor students during the school day shifts the burden of responsibility away from the administrators and teachers. (The district) needs to be in the business of educating children, not treating them like prisoners in their own schools."
Failing to provide Facebook password gets teacher's aide fired
Stanley concedes that parents confronted with tracking technology at schools might have a very different reaction than privacy advocates. Many already pay cellphone providers so they can use mobile GPS tracking tools to keep tabs on their children.?Parents also tend to keep kids much closer at hand then they did a generation ago, when it was common for kids to spend entire days biking around the neighborhood unsupervised. When concerns about school tracking are raised, they sometimes respond with a simple shrug.?
Meanwhile, school officials point out that students have reduced civil rights when on campus. According to school spokesman Pascual Gonzalez, the kids have no right to privacy at school.
"During the school day, when they are within our four walls, we've got to know where those kids are," he said.?"We reject the argument (that their privacy is being invaded). People saying that are not charged with the safety of children."
He dismissed the idea that the cards represent a tracking device, calling it instead a "locator."
"There is nobody sitting at a bank of monitors looking at a bunch of dots on a computer screen," he said. "We only go and look for a student when we have reason to.|
Implementation of the RFID pilot program -- which involves 4,200 students at two of the district's 112 schools?-- has gone on without a hitch, he said.?
So far, it appears parents are buying the district's argument. Gonzalez says only two district families are opposing the cards.?If those students continue to refuse to wear the cards, they are subject to being kicked out of school, he said.
Stanley said he's not surprised at the lack of protest from parents. Many have become much more comfortable with the technology, and there is an apparent lack of consequences stemming from its use. There are no tales of sexual predators hacking databases of kids' fingerprints, no evil school principals who've posted detailed charts of kids' whereabouts on their Facebook page. So when the cost-benefit analysis is presented, it's hard to spell out that cost.
"With privacy, the issue is almost like the environment. We have to ask what kind of society we want to create long term," he said. "These things do have a very real effect on our freedom, but it's very gradual and often very subtle."

It?s coming, a historic storm that could present some similar outcomes to Hurricane Irene and is drawing comparisons to centuries old storms. Hurricane Sandy is set to make landfall somewhere between New Jersey and Connecticut and with the prospect of a huge storm it?s always my plan to hunker down and ride out the storm in the comfort of my own home.
If you?re like me, then you probably already have your plans laid out for the weekend, but this doesn?t mean that you can?t continue to work on your Internet Marketing while you?re buried under a blanket, in fact, that would be a perfect time to focus on some of the things that you know are important but that you just haven?t had time to do.
Grab your iPad or your laptop this weekend and start checking off these items from your to-do list and you?ll be in a strong position to jump start your internet marketing post-Frankenstorm.
1.) Research keywords for Search Engine Optimization (SEO): Start here. Not sure what SEO is or how to get started? Review this resource.
2.) Start your blog: Blogging is a critical piece to your Internet Marketing efforts, but it?s often one of the last things that REALTORS? do. Change that this weekend.
3.) Delete any stale and unused social media accounts: If you?re like me you sign up for every new social network that comes out and then it sits dormant for months with no content on it at all, this looks awful to prospective clients. These sites will get found and you will be judged by clients on what they find. It?s better for them to find nothing then to find a whole bunch of somethings with nothing on them.
4.) Update your Facebook profile: This is one you don?t want to delete, in fact, you really need to focus on it. With over 1 billion users and nearly 2 million here in Connecticut, Facebook is a key to unlocking HUGE social media potential for your business.
5.) Google yourself: Knowing what prospects will see when they Google you is important, because trust me they will Google you. If you don?t like what you see, get to work on changing it.
These five things are pretty simple to do and can be done on any of your devices, so you can cuddle up, look out the window and laugh at the #Frankenstorm while it blows through and you knock out some important to dos on your Internet Marketing list.
What is on your #Frankenstorm To Do List? Share it in the comments below.

Amazon has just released its earnings for the third quarter of the year and it looks like it's slightly off analysts' expectations. The company reported $13.18 billion in revenue (a growth of 27 percent) and an operating loss of $28 million, with net income standing at a loss of $274 million. As Amazon notes, though, a chunk of that, some $169 million, comes from losses resulting from its investment in LivingSocial -- it says the figure is "primarily attributable to its impairment charge of certain assets, including goodwill." Expectedly, the company still isn't offering any specific numbers for device sales, noting only that the Kindle Fire HD is the number one selling product across Amazon worldwide, and that the next two bestselling products worldwide are the Kindle Paperwhite and the $69 Kindle. As for its outlook for the next quarter, the company is expecting net sales of between $20.25 billion and $22.75 billion, and operating income of anywhere from a loss of $490 million to a profit of $310 million. You can find the company's full breakdown of all the numbers at the link below.

Floyd Palmer is accused in the fatal shooting of a church volunteer.
A man accused of killing a volunteer leading a prayer service at a Georgia megachurch was charged more than a decade ago with shooting a co-worker at a mosque in Maryland, according to police documents.
Floyd Palmer was acting as security at a Baltimore mosque in June 2001 when he shot another man working with him, wounding him in the back, according to a police report obtained by The Associated Press on Thursday. Palmer tried to fire the gun again, but it jammed. When other people ran over to him, he turned the gun on them, but it again wouldn't fire, according to the documents.
?
The report did not say why Palmer shot the man in the back.
But Christine Singleterry, Palmer?s former mother-in-law, told?the Atlanta Journal-Constitution?that?Palmer shot the man following an argument. ?He got him to go outside and then shot him in the parking lot,? she was quoted as saying.?She told the newspaper Palmer served about 18 months in a mental facility and was released.
It's not clear when he made his way ?to Atlanta. He had been working as a maintenance facilities employee at World Changers Church International near College Park, but quit in August for "personal reasons," Fulton County Police Cpl. Kay Lester said.?
On Wednesday, authorities said Palmer, 51, calmly walked into a chapel as Greg McDowell, 39, was leading a morning prayer service for a group of about 25 people.?
Only McDowell was shot. Authorities are trying to figure out if the two men knew each other.?
Palmer casually walked out of the chapel and police arrested him several hours later when they spotted his station wagon at a mall in suburban Atlanta. Police said they have not found the gun.

A Fulton County Sheriff's Deputy stands guard outside the World Changers International church after a fatal shooting inside on Wednesday.
Police searched Palmer?s apartment in Riverdale in Clayton County on Wednesday night and Thursday morning, the Journal-Constitution reported. ?They removed several items from the apartment, but it was not immediately clear what they took out, the newspaper said.
Visibly distraught members of McDowell's family showed up at the Fulton County jail for Palmer's first court hearing Thursday, but he waived his appearance.
Palmer faces charges of homicide murder, felony murder, aggravated assault murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. His next hearing is Nov. 8.?
Ken Terry, a church pastor acting as a spokesman for McDowell's family, said the church family was distraught and trying to comfort McDowell's family.?
"He would be considered a model dad," Terry said. "To have this happen is just devastating."?
Watch US News crime videos on NBCNews.com
Renee Sunshine Lewis of the Fulton County victim assistance program called McDowell "a very loving person, extremely loving" and said "the family is just asking for prayers at this time."?
Although the campus has security officers and surveillance cameras, Lester said the suspect was known to some at the service, so his presence wouldn't have been unusual.?
The violence upset members and neighbors of the church, which is one of the largest in the United States, claiming 30,000 members at the main campus and a ministry of satellite churches across the country.?
World Changers is led by the Rev. Creflo Dollar, who was not there at the time of the shooting.?
Along with Bishop Eddie Long, Dollar is one of the most prominent African-American preachers based around Atlanta who have built successful ministries on the prosperity gospel, which teaches that God wants to bless the faithful with earthly riches.?
Dollar didn't immediately respond to media requests for comment, but he preached Wednesday evening at a Bible study in the campus's larger World Dome sanctuary. He repeated the importance of having faith in God even when bad things happen and rejecting fear and doubt.?
"We pray for this family," he said, referring to McDowell. "We pray for both families and then we pray for every family that's in here tonight."

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) ? Former LSU football standouts Tyrann Mathieu and Jordan Jefferson were among four ex-players arrested Thursday after police found them with marijuana at Mathieu's apartment, police said.
Lt. Don Kelly, a Baton Rouge Police spokesman, said officers were called to the apartment complex about 3:30 p.m. after receiving a complaint about a man forcing his way through the security gate before going to Mathieu's apartment.
"Officers immediately smelled a strong odor of marijuana and obtained consent from Mathieu to search the apartment," Kelly said.
Inside they found Jefferson and two other men ? Karnell Hatcher and Derrick Bryant ? as well as a marijuana grinder, digital scale and 10 bags of high-grade marijuana. Kelly said seven of the bags were found inside Bryant's book bag.
Mathieu, 20, of New Orleans, and Jefferson, 22, of St. Rose, La., were booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on charges of simple possession of marijuana. Hatcher, 22, of Delray Beach, Fla., was booked with second-offense simple possession of marijuana and Bryant, 22, of Lawrenceville, Ga., was booked with possession with intent to distribute marijuana.
Mathieu, a former Heisman Trophy finalist and cornerback known as the "Honey Badger," has no criminal record but has well documented drug problems that led to his dismissal from the Tigers in August. He had enrolled as a student at the school following two weeks of rehab under the care of former NBA player John Lucas. He also had talked about possibly returning to the team for the 2013 season with two seasons of eligibility. He is also eligible to apply for the NFL draft in April.
Jefferson, the Tigers' former starting quarterback, had returned to Baton Rouge to finish his degree after playing with the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League. He also was a free agent signee with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers before joining the Alouettes.
Jefferson had been suspended for the start of his senior season in connection with a preseason bar fight near campus.
Lance Unglesby, Jefferson's lawyer in the misdemeanor criminal case, said a discovery hearing in that matter is scheduled next week. He said his client has always maintained his innocence in the bar fight.
"My opinion that Jordan is a fine young man remains the same," Unglesby said.
Unglesby said he had not yet been provided with any details of Jefferson's latest arrest, but stressed, "All individuals are presumed innocent and I look forward to the opportunity to examine the facts of this case to find out what really happened."
It was not immediately known whether Mathieu, Hatcher or Bryant had lawyers.
A spokeswoman for the university did not immediately respond to messages left by telephone and email.
Hatcher was a linebacker for the Tigers and finished with 133 career tackles, 3.5 for a loss and two forced fumbles.
Bryant, a backup safety, finished with 28 tackles, 2.0 for a loss and one sack.

ScienceDaily (Oct. 24, 2012) ? Children with serious anger problems can be helped by a simple video game that hones their ability to regulate their emotions, finds a pilot study at Boston Children's Hospital. Results were published online October 24 in the journal Adolescent Psychiatry.
Noticing that children with anger control problems are often uninterested in psychotherapy, but very eager to play video games, Jason Kahn, PhD, and Joseph Gonzalez-Heydrich, MD, at Boston Children's Hospital developed "RAGE Control" to motivate children to practice emotional control skills that they can later use in challenging life situations.
The fast-paced game involves shooting at enemy spaceships while avoiding shooting at friendly ones. As children play, a monitor on one finger tracks their heart rate and displays it on the computer screen. When heart rate goes above a certain level, players lose their ability to shoot at the enemy spaceships. To improve their game, they must learn to keep calm.
"The connections between the brain's executive control centers and emotional centers are weak in people with severe anger problems," explains Gonzalez-Heydrich, chief of Psychopharmacology at Boston Children's and senior investigator on the study. "However, to succeed at RAGE Control, players have to learn to use these centers at the same time to score points."
The study, led by first author Peter Ducharme, MSW, a clinical social worker at Boston Children's, compared two groups of 9- to 17-year-old children admitted to the hospital's Psychiatry Inpatient Service who had high levels of anger. To qualify for the study, the children had to have a normal IQ and not need a medication change during the five-day study period.
One group, with 19 children, received standard treatments for anger including cognitive-behavioral therapy, presentation of relaxation techniques and social skills training for five consecutive business days. The second group, with 18 children, got these same treatments, but spent the last 15 minutes of their psychotherapy session playing RAGE Control.
After five sessions, the video gamers were significantly better at keeping their heart rate down. They showed clinically significant decreases in anger scores on the State Trait Anger Expression Inventory-Child and Adolescent (STAXI-CA), and specifically on:
The gamers also had a decrease in suppressed, internalized anger that reached marginal statistical significance. In contrast, the standard-treatment group showed no significant change from baseline on any of the above measures.
The video gamers gave their therapy experience high marks for helpfulness (5 to 6 on a scale of 7). "Kids reported feeling better control of their emotions when encountering day to day frustrations on the unit," says Ducharme. "While this was a pilot study, and we weren't able to follow the kids after they were discharged, we think the game will help them control their emotions in other environments."
More studies in progress
The investigators are now conducting a randomized, controlled clinical trial of RAGE Control in the outpatient clinic at Boston Children's that adds a cooperative component. The children team up with a parent for 10 game sessions at the clinic; if either the parent's or the child's heart rate goes up, neither of them can shoot, forcing them to help calm each other. (Click here for more information.)
The research team plans another clinical trial to test whether letting children take RAGE Control home, to play with parents and siblings, will increase its effect.
In addition, Kahn is spearheading a team effort to develop toys to enhance emotional regulation skills in children too young for RAGE Control. These toys include racing cars that stop if a child gets too excited and, for even younger children, a cooperative game where children try to help each other stack blocks (if heart rate goes up, the table becomes wobbly and the blocks topple).
