Nokia brings Lumia 925 for T-Mobile to CTIA 2013, we go hands-on

Nokia brings Lumia 925 for TMobile to CTIA 2013, we go handson

We've already spent some quality time with Nokia's handsome Lumia 925 and while it's no secret the company's Windows Phone flagship is coming to the US courtesy of T-Mobile, we'd never actually seen the carrier-branded model -- until now, that is. Nokia brought T-Mobile's version of the handset to CTIA 2013 where we took it for a brief spin. As you'd expect, the phone is identical to its global twin save for the operator's logo below the capacitive button and the radios which support T-Mobile's bands. Unfortunately, the Lumia 925 we played with was not final, so the software was off limits. In terms of hardware, it features the same 4.5-inch 1,280 x 768 AMOLED screen, 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 Pro processor, 1GB RAM, 16GB of storage and 8.7-megapixel camera with OIS. This is definitely one of Nokia's most attractive designs yet, and we're looking forward to getting our hands on a review unit soon. In the meantime, why not check out the gallery below?

More Hezbollah fighters spotted with Syrian army

AMMAN (Reuters) - Lebanese Hezbollah fighters and Syrian soldiers, backed by air strikes and artillery, renewed an offensive aimed at driving Syrian rebels from the town of Qusair near the Lebanese border on Tuesday, opposition activists said.

They said fighting was raging in Qusair, as well as in areas to the east where several army bases are located, and in the Hezbollah-held southern and western approaches to the town.

One activist, Tareq Murei said rebel brigades in the north and west of Qusair were trying to repel the latest attacks, in which three residents had been killed, bringing the number of rebel and civilian deaths in the last 48 hours to more than 100.

Syrian state media have said President Bashar al-Assad's forces had reasserted control over most of Qusair, but Murei said the army-Hezbollah offensive had been ineffectual.

Opposition sources say rebels have been preparing their defences for months, setting boobytraps, mines and roadside bombs to counter armored assaults and Hezbollah jeeps.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said three Hezbollah fighters had died of wounds suffered in Sunday's heavy fighting in Qusair, bringing the Hezbollah death toll there to 31.

Lebanese security sources have put Hezbollah's losses at 12 dead. The Iranian-backed movement itself has given no figures.

Hezbollah's role in the Qusair battle, its biggest military commitment yet in support of Assad, has prompted international alarm that Syria's civil war may spread to Lebanon and beyond. The United States has called urgently for restraint.

The Qusair region, peppered by Sunni and Shi'ite villages, has been an important supply route from Lebanon for rebels in the central province of Homs, a major prize in the conflict.

Assad, who is from Syria's minority Alawite sect and has long backed Hezbollah in Lebanon, is fighting a Sunni-led revolt which began with peaceful protests in March 2011. His violent response eventually prompted rebels to take up arms.

Poor children in Wisconsin schools increases

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- The percentage of children in Wisconsin public schools who come from families poor enough to receive free and reduced-priced lunches has increased for the ninth year in a row.

The state Department of Public Instruction reported Monday that 43.2 percent of children in public schools are on the programs, up from 42.5 percent the previous year.

There are nearly 359,000 students in Wisconsin in the programs.

Nearly 37 percent of students come from families that earn less than $30,000 a year, qualifying them for free meals. Another 6.3 percent are eligible for reduced-price meals.

There are 110 school districts with more than half of their students in the program, including Wisconsin's five largest districts in Milwaukee, Madison, Kenosha, Green Bay and Racine.

Militiamen attack gas complex in western Libya

TRIPOLI, Libya (AP) ? A Libyan gas company official says militiamen have attacked a natural gas complex in the country's west, injuring two guards and stealing weapons and military vehicles.

The official says the attack took place early Monday and targeted the Mellitah Oil and Gas complex near Zwara, about 110 kilometers (70 miles) from the capital, Tripoli. The complex is a joint venture between Libya's National Oil Corp. and Italy's largest energy company, Eni SpA. The militiamen fled the site briefly after seizing weapons and equipment from the guards.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to brief reporters.

A military official told Libya's official news agency that military helicopters are searching for the attackers.

Over a year after toppling Moammar Gadhafi's regime, Libya is plagued by lawlessness.

Dollar firms as suspense builds, Asia shares dip

    By Masayuki Kitano

SINGAPORE (Reuters) - "Will he or won't he?" is the question investors want answered at Wednesday's Congressional testimony by Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke, as suspense builds on whether the Fed will soon start tapering its bond-buying stimulus scheme - as hinted at by a Fed regional president last week.

The dollar inched higher versus a basket of currencies on Tuesday but stayed below a three-year high, as investors ponder if Bernanke might reveal the timing of any wind-down at his appearance before the Joint Economic Committee before Congress takes its Memorial Day recess.

A start to cutting the bond-buying program beginning in the northern summer was hinted at by San Francisco Fed President John Williams last week - putting the issue firmly on the economic committee's agenda.

The U.S. dollar index, which measures the greenback's value against a basket of currencies, edged up 0.1 percent to 83.797 <.dxy>. On Monday, the dollar index had shed 0.6 percent, retreating from Friday's high of 84.371, its strongest level since July 2010.

MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan <.miapj0000pus> eased 0.2 percent.

Australian shares slipped 0.7 percent <.axjo> on profit-taking. In South Korea, the Korea Composite Stock Price Index <.ks11> eased 0.2 percent to 1,978.74, inching away from a closely-watched resistance level.

"The market atmosphere is pretty good, though it is still facing psychological resistance near 2,000 points," said Kim Young-june, a market analyst at SK Securities.

Japan's Nikkei share average slipped initially as a pause in the yen's weakness spurred profit-taking, but later showed resilience.

The Nikkei touched a 5-1/2 year intraday high as retail investors scooped up underperforming shares, and was last up 0.1 percent <.n225> on the day.

"Institutional investors are actually rather quiet today. It seems to be more retail-investor-driven today," said a senior trader at a foreign bank.

Against the yen, the dollar edged up 0.2 percent to 102.47 yen but remained below a 4-1/2-year high of 103.32 yen set on Friday.

Spot gold fell 0.4 percent to $1,388.09. Gold drifted lower on outflows from exchange-traded funds and as the dollar firmed, putting pressure on bullion which has lost nearly a fifth of its value this year.

Brent crude edged up 0.1 percent to $104.86 a barrel.

Global equity markets had mostly pushed higher on Monday, driven up by a flurry of merger and acquisition activity, with MSCI's all-country world equity index <.miwo00000pus> touching its highest level since June 2008.

U.S. stocks ended little changed on Monday, but both the U.S. benchmark S&P 500 index and the Dow briefly hit all-time intraday highs. <.n/>

Independent Scotland open to Cyprus-style bank risks, says Britain

    By William James

LONDON (Reuters) - An independent Scotland would have a vastly oversized financial sector that would leave it vulnerable to a Cyprus-style banking crisis, Britain's finance ministry says.

Before a referendum due in September 2014 on whether Scotland should split from the United Kingdom, the British government is analyzing the impact of independence on Scotland, which has a population of about 5 million.

A report from the finance ministry - or Treasury - says that without the British government's regulatory framework, Scotland would be left vulnerable by having a banking sector that dwarfs its economy, driving businesses out of the country.

"An independent Scotland would have an exceptionally large banking sector compared to the size of its economy - with banking assets of more than 1250 percent of Scottish GDP - making it more vulnerable to financial shocks and the volatility of the sector," said a Treasury statement which contained excerpts from the report, due to be published on Monday.

The Scottish National Party (SNP), which controls Scotland's devolved government and is behind the independence campaign, dismissed the report and said it would produce its own study on Tuesday highlighting the benefits of a split from Britain

"An independent Scotland will be an economic success story, as we will outline this coming week, and the tall tales from the Treasury can't hide that reality," said Scottish Finance Secretary John Swinney of the SNP.

Opinion polls indicate the pro-independence movement in Scotland has the support of about a third of voters, while nearly 60 percent want to stay in the United Kingdom. British Prime Minister David Cameron has campaigned against Scottish independence.

At 12-1/2 times the size of Scotland's economic output, Scotland's banking sector would be even more out of proportion to the economy than that of Cyprus, which ground to a standstill earlier this year as the cost of recapitalizing its banks, which had assets worth nine times its GDP, spiraled.

"Overall, the experience of financial crises shows that countries with a large banking sector compared to the size of their GDP are significantly more vulnerable," the Treasury statement said.

Scotland currently benefits from the British government's capacity to support struggling banks.

During the 2007/08 financial crisis, government support for Britain's financial sector peaked at more than 1 trillion pounds' ($1.5 trillion) worth of guarantees and cash injections.

The Treasury report will say any future bank rescues would place a heavy burden on Scottish taxpayers, and could generate concerns about state finances that might discourage firms from basing their operations there.

Previous reports from the British government have said that there is no clear case for an independent Scotland to share use of the British pound, and that it might have to reapply for membership of international bodies such as the European Union.

Flickr's one of the elder statesmen of the online photo sharing world, but in recent years its UI has grown a bit long in the tooth when compared to the eye candy provided by other kids on the social sharing block. That's all changed as of today, as Marissa Mayer's team has overhauled Flickr's look on the web and in its Android app. Out goes the old layout, where text and white space commanded almost as much real estate as your photos, and in comes a tiled layout that's nothing but images.

UFC on FX 8?s Three Stars: Vitor Belfort, Ronaldo Souza and Fabio Maldonado

Who stood out in Saturday night's fights?

No. 1 star -- Vitor Belfort*: We will be watching highlights of that knockout for years to come. The timing, explosion and landing spot of the kick were just perfect. The knockout was so great the UFC didn't even have to say who they were talking about when they announced who the $50,000 Knockout of the Night bonus was awarded to.

Then why the asterisk? Because it's hard to look at what Belfort did and not wonder if the testosterone replacement therapy he used throughout his camp played a part. His late-career resurgence doesn't pass the smell test.

No. 2 star -- Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza: Did Chris Camozzi even realize he was in the arm triangle choke that Souza so expertly applied? Souza's performance on Saturday night served notice to the UFC middleweights. It also earned him a $50,000 Submission of the Night bonus. All in all, it was a pretty good start in the UFC for the Strikeforce veteran.

No. 3 star -- Fabio Maldonado: Perhaps it wasn't the prettiest win of the night, but it got the job done against some tough odds. Maldonado withstood a kick to the groin that made even me wince and came back to win by decision. That's more than enough to earn a star.

Who stood out for you? Speak up on Facebook or Twitter.

Russian oligarchs foot most of 2014 Sochi Olympics

FILE - In this Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2011 file photo, then Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, left, accompanied by Interros Investment Company President Vladimir Potanin visits the Roza Khutorski resort that is under construction for the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics, near the Black Sea resort of Sochi, southern Russia. Metals tycoon Vladimir Potanin, whose fortune is an estimated US dlrs 14.3 billion, started building the Roza Khutor ski resort before Sochi was picked to hold the Olympics. Infrastructure required by the International Olympic Committee costing US dlrs 500 million boosted his total bill to US dlrs 2.5 billion. (AP Photo/Mikhail Metzel, File)

(AP) ? The mountains of Sochi are now home to Potanin's slope, Gazprom's gondola lift and Sberbank's ski jump. The nicknames used by locals and an army of construction workers leave no doubt about who is paying for the 2014 Winter Games: Russia's business powerhouses.

Other countries that have hosted the Olympics have overwhelmingly used public funds to pay for the construction of needed venues and new infrastructure. The Russian government, however, has gotten state-controlled companies and tycoons to foot more than half of the bill, which now stands at $51 billion and makes the 2014 Winter Games by far the most expensive Olympics in history. In contrast, the much-larger 2012 Summer Olympics in London cost about $14.3 billion and the 2008 Summer Games in Beijing cost about $40 billion.

For President Vladimir Putin, the games have been a matter of pride. He has entrusted the country's top businessmen with Sochi's key projects. He himself is spending increasing amounts of time in the southern Russian city, hosting world leaders at his luxurious presidential palace.

Mikhail Kasyanov, a former prime minister under Putin, described the tycoons' participation as a sort of tax imposed by the president.

"If you want to carry on doing business in Russia, here's the tax you need to pay ? the kind of a tax that he wants you to pay," Kasyanov, now an opposition leader, told The Associated Press.

This is particularly true of those like metals tycoons Vladimir Potanin and Oleg Deripaska, who made their fortunes in the rags-to-riches privatizations after the 1991 collapse of the Soviet Union. For others who have grown fabulously wealthy since Putin came to power in 2000, the 2014 Olympics have been a chance to reap the profits through lucrative state contracts.

Most of the projects the tycoons are involved in are not profitable ? and many businessmen are making no secret of the losses they are incurring. But anyone who does business in Russia today is acutely aware of the importance of maintaining good relations with the government ? and especially with Putin. The tycoons remember well how Putin in 2008, with one verbal attack, sent the stock of metals company Mechel tumbling 40 percent, cutting $6 billion from its shareholder value.

"Russian big business is heavily dependent on the government and often has to follow Putin's requests and take on projects that are important for top officials," said Vladimir Milov, an economist and former deputy energy minister who also is now part of the anti-Putin opposition.

The tycoons and state-owned companies dismiss claims that they were pressured to invest in Sochi or that they did so in exchange for promises of preferential treatment.

Gazprom, the world's largest natural gas producer and a publicly traded company, said in a written statement to the AP that its work in Sochi is "both a business project and serious social responsibility." Gazprom's Sochi projects are vast. It is building a pipeline to bring gas supplies to the Sochi area, a power station in a Sochi suburb, an Alpine ski resort, one of the three Olympic villages and a cross-country skiing and biathlon center. Its total costs run to $3 billion.

Andrei Elinson, deputy general director at Deripaska's Basic Element investment vehicle, insists its Sochi projects were all designed to be profitable. The company is building an Olympic village and a seaport and has just finished revamping the Sochi airport, for a combined cost of $1.4 billion.

"We are a strategic investor in the area. We believe in the development of the area on the whole," Elinson said. After the games, Basic Element plans to convert the Olympic village into apartments and the sea port into a marina.

Even so, some tycoons are grumbling that they have been hit up with unexpected demands that are stretching their funds more than anticipated. Their balance sheets have been dragged down by a flow of requests from the state contractor Olimpstroi to build more infrastructure than originally planned.

Potanin started building his Roza Khutor ski resort even before Sochi was picked in 2007 to host the 2014 games. He is spending $2.5 billion, including $500 million on infrastructure required by the International Olympic Committee. In addition, the Alpine resort had to close to tourists for months at a time while hosting Olympic tests events during the past two winter seasons, costing it $3.2 million in lost revenue each month it was closed, according to Roza Khutor general director Sergei Bachin.

When Potanin's Interros holding company first committed to the games, "we had no idea what exactly would be required from us," Bachin said. Now delivering everything on time has become "a matter of honor," he said. Still, looking back, Bachin said Roza Khutor should not have been so compliant.

"When we were asked to build this or that, we were probably too yielding in taking up those requests," he said.

Potanin was the first to raise his voice. Last year he said he expected the Russian government to compensate him for at least the $500 million he is spending doing work that he said should have been the government's responsibility.

Roza Khutor has asked the government to create a special economic zone in the Sochi area. Tax rebates would allow the resort to be "operationally sound" and help it repay loans to the state-owned VEB bank more quickly, Bachin said.

The frustrations have been shared by Deripaska's Basic Element, which is suing Olimpstroi for about $50 million, the amount it had to fork out when Olimpstroi questioned the quality of the gravel used to protect the coast at the sea port. Deripaska's company also complained that the sea port it built is receiving only 20 percent of the cargo load that had been promised by the government, leaving revenues far lower than expected.

"It's pretty frustrating," Elinson said. "But we think it's curable if the government takes certain responsibly for those actions and comes up with a solution that would allow the project and the investor to recover."

He said at this stage all investors are concerned about the additional costs they have faced in Sochi.

Last month, Basic Element, Interros, Gazprom and state-owned Sberbank asked the government for help in covering some of their losses. Although there has not been an official response to the plea, the government has said in the past that investors bear full responsibility for any losses.

"Those are the risks of those who made the decision," Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Kozak, who is overseeing the Sochi preparation, said in response to complaints last year.

In contrast to the Boris Yeltsin-era oligarchs like Deripaska and Potanin who are involved in capital-consuming projects with uncertain commercial prospects, the new generation of billionaires with close ties to Putin seems actually to be making money in Sochi.

One man who stands to profit from the games is Arkady Rotenberg, who has known Putin since he was 12.

Through a majority-owned subsidiary, Rotenberg holds nearly 39 percent of the Mostotrest company, which has amassed a dozen Olympics-related state contracts to build nearly all of the highways in the area. Its projects include a $1.6 billion bypass for Sochi, as well as tunnels, bridges and railroads for a total of at least $3.4 billion.

"Those who became billionaires before Putin's rise to power now have to pay the price, and that's why they're being forced to invest and build," Kasyanov said. "Those of Putin's generation are out there to make money. They use public funds. They don't invest their own money but simply work on state contracts."

One Russian businessman in charge of an Olympic project was publicly disgraced when he failed to deliver. On a tour of Olympic sites in February, Putin harshly scolded officials for the huge delays and cost overruns in building the ski jump, a project run by real estate developer Akhmed Bilalov, who had once owned 90 percent of it. The state-controlled Sberbank had taken a controlling stake in 2012 when it was clear the project was in trouble, and Bilalov's younger brother handed over the remaining 40 percent stake after Putin's televised dressing down.

Bilalov was immediately stripped of his position as a vice president of the Russian Olympic Committee, but Putin still was not done with him. In April, prosecutors charged Bilalov with abuse of office in relation to his work as chairman of a state company that is building ski resorts elsewhere in the Caucasus Mountains of southern Russia. Facing up to four years in prison if convicted, Bilalov left Russia.

At least one company has already acknowledged the futility of its investment in Sochi.

During his inspection tour in February, Putin asked the chairman of mining giant UGMK, Andrei Bokarev, whether he would give the new $100 million hockey arena that UGMK has built to the state after the games.

"There's nothing standing in the way of you doing it," Putin commented.

That was not a direct order but its intent was clear.

Putting aside previous pledges that the stadium would be dismantled after the Sochi games and moved near an UGMK facility to benefit the company's workers, Bokarev responded with gusto to the suggestion.

    "We're ready!" he said.

First lady to high school grads: Live your dreams

(AP Photo/Mark Humphrey)

(AP) ? First lady Michelle Obama has some advice for some Tennessee high school graduates: Strike your own path in college and life and work to overcome inevitable failures with determination and grit.

Mrs. Obama spoke for 22 minutes to the graduates of Martin Luther King Jr. Academic Magnet High School on Saturday in her only high school commencement address this year. The ceremony took place in the gymnasium of nearby Tennessee State University.

The first lady told the 170 graduates that she spent too much of her own time in college focusing on academic achievements. While her success in college and law school led to a high-profile job, she said, she ended up leaving to focus on public service.

"My message to all of you today is this: Do not waste a minute living someone else's dream," she said. "It takes a lot of real work to discover what brings you joy ... and you won't find what you love simply by checking boxes or padding your GPA."

Mrs. Obama lauded the school ? it's on the site of one of the city's first to educate African-Americans ? for its graduation rate, spirit of volunteerism and healthy food programs. She noted that each graduate was going on to either higher education or the military.

She said MLK reminded her of her own high school experience in Chicago.

"My No. 1 goal was to go to a high school that would push me and challenge me," she said. "I wanted to go somewhere that would celebrate achievement. A place where academic success wouldn't make me a target of teasing or bullying, but instead would be a badge of honor."

But Mrs. Obama lamented that not all students have the same opportunities.

"Unfortunately, schools like this don't exist for every kid," she said. "You are blessed."

The first lady told graduates that failure may be a part of their college lives and careers, and that how they respond to any pitfalls will define them.

"That's when you find out what you're really made of in those hard times," she said. "But you can only do that if you're willing to put yourself in a position where you might fail."

Overcoming adversity has been the hallmark of many great people, she said.

"Oprah was demoted from her first job as a news anchor, and now she doesn't even need a last name," she said of media giant Oprah Winfrey. "And then there's this guy Barack Obama ... he lost his first race for Congress, and now he gets to call himself my husband."

Mrs. Obama later presented graduate diplomas on stage and posed for photos with graduates.

"We didn't know we would get to hug her," said graduate Natey Kinzounza, 18. "She's got a great sense of humor. She's like my mom, she's just a very real person."

(AP Photo/Edlib News Network ENN)

(AP) ? Gunmen on Saturday abducted the elderly father of Syria's deputy foreign minister, the official's office said, in the latest kidnapping targeting family members of figures in President Bashar Assad's regime.

The father of Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad was seized Saturday in the village of Ghossom in the southern province of Daraa, Mekdad's office said. An official in the office said the man is in his 80s, but he did not know his name.

The abduction was also reported by Beirut-based Al-Mayadeen TV, which has several reporters in Syria and is seen as sympathetic to the regime.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility, but armed opposition groups in Syria have targeted senior regime officials or members of their families in the past for kidnapping or assassination in the past.

Last year, rebels carried out one of the highest-profile attacks against regime officials to date, detonating a bomb inside a high-level crisis meeting that killed four advisers of Assad, including the defense minister and the president's brother-in-law.

The uprising against Assad erupted in March 2011 and escalated into a civil war that has left tens of thousands dead and several million displaced.

Lack of unity among rebel fighters has characterized the armed conflict from the start, and there were new signs Saturday that infighting is on the rise.

Activists on Saturday reported a wave of mutual kidnappings between rival Islamic militant groups in the northern city of Aleppo after clashes killed at least four rebel fighters.

The director of the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, Rami Abdul-Rahman, said a coalition of rebel groups known as the Judicial Council had accused another armed opposition faction, the Ghurabaa al-Sham, of plundering factories in Aleppo's industrial neighborhood. Aleppo, Syria's largest city and a former commercial center, is split between rebel and government control.

Any internal fighting between rebels in the city would play into the hands of the regime, which is trying to tarnish the image of the opposition by saying it is dominated by extremists linked to al-Qaida network.

Aleppo, a city of 3 million that was once a bastion of support for President Bashar Assad, has been engulfed in heavy fighting since rebels launched an assault there in July and captured several neighborhoods. Over the past few weeks, regime forces have been pursuing an offensive in the city, mainly focused on pushing the rebels from around the international airport and a nearby military air base.

Abdul-Rahman said tensions among rebel factions have been rising in opposition-held areas, mostly on the eastern side of the city.

The two groups, the Judicial Council and the Ghurabaa al-Sham, clashed on Tuesday near Aleppo in fighting that left four members of the Judicial Council dead, Abldul-Rahman said. He added that the Judicial Council is now holding dozens of members of Ghurabaa al-Sham captive.

Aleppo-based activist Mohammed Saeed said Ghurabaa al-Sham withdrew its fighters from several neighborhoods, including the industrial area.

Saeed said Ghurabaa al-Sham released all Judicial Council members it was holding while the other group refused to set free Ghuarbaa al-Sham members and is still holding them.

"The situation is very tense in Aleppo," said Abdul-Rahman, who relies on a network of activists around the country.

He said that Ghurabaa al-Sham has warned it will bring some of its members from outside the city to fight against the Judicial Council if its members are not freed.

The Judicial Council is an umbrella organization that includes the Tawheed Brigade, Ahrar al-Sham and the al-Qaida-affiliated Jabhat al-Nusra ? one of the most effective forces among the mosaic of rebel brigades fighting to topple Assad in Syria's civil war.

The Observatory also reported that rebels captured several villages late Friday in the central province of Hama after weeks of fighting with government troops. It said the villages were inhabited by members of Assad's minority Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shiite Islam.

It said the Alawite villages ? Tleisiyeh, Zaghba, Shaata and Balil ? are all on the eastern side of the central province. The Observatory said residents fled the area captured by rebels.

The uprising against Assad became an outlet for long-suppressed grievances, mostly by poor Sunnis from marginalized areas.

Earlier this month, activists reported that troops and pro-government Alawite gunmen killed more than 100 people in Sunnis areas in the coastal city of Banias and the nearby town of Bayda. The violence in Banias and Bayda bears a close resemblance to two reported mass killings last year in Houla and Qubeir, Sunni villages surrounded by Alawite towns.

Many of the rebels trying to overthrow Assad today say they want to replace his government with an Islamic state.

The Syrian National Coalition, the main umbrella opposition group, said government forces are currently besieging the towns of Halfaya and Aqrab in Hama and have shut down communications in the area.

"Civilians in those areas are now cut off from contact with the outside world, and lives are in extreme danger," the coalition said.

The Observatory and the Local Coordination Committees, another activist group, reported intense clashes around the town of Qusair near the Lebanon border. Syrian opposition groups say members of Lebanon's militant Hezbollah group are taking part in the fighting along with Assad's forces.

When You Should Hire A Los Angeles Personal Injury Attorney ...

The best time to hire a Los Angeles personal injury attorney is when you have suffered injuries in an auto accident. Filing a claim against your insurance coverage often requires the skill of a personal lawyer to help you win a just and fair settlement for the damages you received in the incident.

Having legal representation in a court of law will ensure you get the best settlement. Generally, insurance companies work hard to settle for as little money as possible, taking advantage of your legal inexperience. Alternatively, skillful lawyers should know exactly how much the case is worth, for the suffering you have experienced, during the incident and afterwards.

A skill, experienced personal injuries lawyer should have a full understanding of the dynamics of the legal court system. Spending years working with comparative negligence cases, they know how to fight for you to get you just compensation, based on how you were involved in the accident. Typically, they will know whether the case has merit, and if you can expect to receive money even if you caused the accident.

In the world of the court system, insurance company law is unique. Opening a case to seek compensation requires a full understanding of how to gather evidence, information and details from witnesses to obtain the money you are entitled to for the experience you suffer.

Most skillful Los Angeles personal injuries attorneys have handled a variety of cases similar to yours. They understand how to investigate your specific accident, and obtain all the details from the police, the accident adjuster, and every party involved in the incident. Both your insurance company, and the carrier of the person who hit you, will deal directly with your attorneys instead of discussing the case with you.

The simplest way to negotiate fair compensation is to hire legal representation. As a representative speaking for you, your legal professional will move your case quickly through the court system until a remedy has been found an agreed-upon by the judge.

The best way to determine which experienced Los Angeles personal injuries attorney will have the skills and knowledge required to handle the case is to interview or consult three or four lawyers. You need to ask each one how many years of practice they have, how many cases identical to yours they been involved in, and whether other lawyers and non-attorneys will be involved in your case.

You will need to know if that particular lawyer believes your case is one that will settle or need to go to trial. You should discuss the potential expenses involved in investigating, preparing and taking your case to settlement or to trial.

After you have selected and hired the best Los Angeles personal injury attorney to represent you in the case, it is imperative to be straightforward concerning all the details and information about your accident. When your lawyer has complete knowledge of everything that occurred, he or she will be able to develop a plan to best represent your case in the court system, based on all the evidence, details and information they have available.

Mixed messages on Nexus Q support suggest Google doesn't know what to do with it, either

Yesterday there was some pretty damning news for owners of Google's Nexus Q musical orb: the device isn't supported in the current version of the its Play Music app. This much is undoubtedly true, and verified by many owners. What's less clear, however, is whether this really is the end of the road. All the signs may be there, but some readers have forwarded us emails received from Google Play Support advising that a fix for Nexus Q streaming is definitely on the way. We contacted Google directly, but it was unable to give an official statement on the issue. We were simply told that the developer product never made it to commercial release, and as such the company can't promise either way. Mountain View isn't shy about shuttering much-loved services, so Nexus Q owners might take a small amount of solace from this current ambiguity, at least enough to delay taking matters into their own hands.

Intuit Grant Gives Lucky Birds a New Lease on Life | QuickBooks by ...

Tropical parrots are among the most exotic, beautiful, and intelligent creatures?that may be kept as domesticated pets. As such, they?re always in demand. But caring for the birds ? which are known for their colorful plumage, hooked bills, and blunt tongues ? is a massive responsibility that many owners are unable or unprepared to handle.

?Parrots are very long-lived,? notes Judy Tennant, founder of?Parrot Partner, a rescue and rehabilitation center based in Ottawa, Ontario. ?Some of them can live for up to 80 years.? Many people are forced to give up their birds for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is how demanding they are, she explains.

?They are wild animals ? semi-tame,? the bird handler?and trainer says, noting that there are very few places for relinquished birds to go today due to the heavy demands of their care.

?We offer a place that?will?take care of them and train them,? Tennant says of Parrot Partner, which she formally launched in 2011. ?We have a veterinary technician on staff, and I?ve got a background in exotic animal training and behavior modification.?

Beyond rescuing birds that need a new home, Tennant and her staff work tirelessly to educate current and prospective parrot owners. Their goal is to foster informed, responsible parrot care.

?It?s a very specialized service we offer ? and I love it, obviously,? confesses Tennant, who was an educator specializing in leadership development and organizational behavior prior to founding her organization. ?I?ve dedicated my life to it.?

Tennant?s passion for parrots inspired her to enter Intuit?s?Small Business Growing Strong?campaign. Her wish: to give all of the parrots she rescues a place where they can fly again.

?What we?re wishing for is an outdoor aviary to house parrots who have been relinquished or given up,? she says. ?These birds are meant to fly. If they don?t, it?s like having a dolphin in a bathtub.?

Tennant thinks an aviary represents the only chance these birds will have to fly somewhat freely again.?Domesticated birds, after all, rarely survive if reintroduced to the wild.? Over time, a parrot?s natural survival instincts ? including their ability to find food ? are severely diminished.

Today Intuit?granted Tennant?s wish to build a new aviary for her beloved birds.

?This is amazing,? she says. ?These guys [the parrots] struggle without being able to fly, and they are really going to just blossom because of this. ? They are going to be able to play together, fly together, and hang upside down from branches.?

Tennant says she gets teary-eyed when she thinks about it. ?We have 20 parrots right now, and we will probably be able to take on more because of this. Imagine 20 parrots being ?let loose? for the first time in years. The improvement in their health, happiness, and disposition is going to be overwhelming.?

NTT Docomo announces the Sony Xperia A

    Xperia A

Mid to high-end handset looks like an Xperia ZR for Japan

As rumored, Japanese carrier NTT Docomo has announced a new handset from Sony today. The Xperia A looks set to fit in Docomo's range somewhere below the Xperia Z -- despite sharing many design features with Sony's 5-incher, the Xperia A is a smaller handset with a little less going on under the hood. In fact, the specs and design are all but identical to the Xperia ZR, a device announced globally just a couple of days ago.

That means you're dealing with a 1.5GHz quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro CPU, a 4.6-inch 720p display on the front and a 13-megapixel Sony Exmor RS shooter around the back. Like the ZR it's also waterproof, and rated IP55/58. You'll also get some Japan-specific features like digital terrestrial TV capabilities and FeliCa mobile payment support. On the software side, it's still Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and the Sony Xperia UI running the show.

The Sony Xperia A on NTT Docomo will go on sale this Friday, May 17 in white, black, pink and "mint" colors.
